Have you ever seen paintings by classical artists such as Vermeer, Caravaggio, Michaelangelo or Titian, and had the feeling that there is much more happening then what ‘meets the eye’? A feeling as if there was a hidden ‘architectural theme’ beneath the figures and objects that served to unite the composition? In this talk we’ll explore how artists can make use of tools such as harmonic divisions, arabesques, repetition of angles, and other means to weave ‘layers of visual information’ into a drawing or painting.
